If you're like me, you have a cough that you’ve been denying because you don’t have time for a cold. We have way too many things to do and illness is not an option. Plus, the only people that enjoy being sick are the people who want attention.
Anyway, it's winter/cold & flu season which is lame. I'm not going to go on a whole spiel about how I don't think medicine or flu shots are a good idea. I'll just say that I wouldn't do either of those. If that's what you want to do then by all means, go ahead. If you want to take a more...holistic approach, here are some essentials for you!
1. Apple Cider Vinegar!
This is one of the greatest things you can purchase this time of year. Or any time of year. ACV is highly acidic and helps the body balance it’s pH levels. It can be used against the common cold, sore throats, runny nose, etc. People usually pair it with honey but if you're a vegan (like me) then you can use agave nectar, bee-free honee, coconut nectar, or even maple syrup. Get (naturally) creative!
It's mainly used for sinus infections but I've seen it used for earaches, in homemade vapor rubs, and a "breathe jar" (if you don't want to use vapor rub). According to Livestrong.com, this oil has "antimicrobial properties...," so it, "infuses your sinuses with anti-viral and anti-bacterial compounds."
Of course these would be on here, right? One way to use onions, without eating them, is to cut them in half and leave them out in the open in your home or room of choice. They absorb bacteria which is helpful for many of us. Healthybliss.net says that white onions work best but TheEasyHomestead.com says yellow onions are best. So just check out their posts and decide for yourself. Or just try both.
The queen of all spices apparently. No, I actually agree. It has a sheet load of nutrients like protein, potassium, vitamins E, C, and K, iron, etc. It's an anti-inflammatory but not a drug, which is great. Use it in tea or try making turmeric milk. Why not add it to your soup or just your food period?
Now if you do decide to make the milk, please, I beg you, DO NOT use cow’s milk. Use a healthier alternative like hemp or rice milk.
I hope these help you in your winter endeavors. I know I will be making all of these myself so videos will be up soon. If you have some of your own cold & flu season must-haves, please share them with us! You could save a life (the pressure is on).
***Please remember that these are suggestions and you should always to talk to your physician before trying things involving your health. ***
